What To Do If You Get 'Glutened'

Updated: May 28

'Glutened' is a term used by coeliacs when they consume gluten. For example, you accidentally eat something that contains gluten, or you eat a 'may contain' that caused a reaction. Or, if you were cross contaminated by gluten so ended up consuming gluten by accident.

So, what should you do? Firstly, do not blame yourself, it is not your fault these things happen no matter how careful you are! What is important is you do your best to heal from it!

Here are some of my tips to heal after being glutened.

  1. Ginger Tablets or Tea

If you're feeling nauseous or experiencing stomach pain, ginger can help ease digestion and settle your stomach. I find ginger tablets or sipping ginger tea really soothing.

  1. Activated Charcoal (with caution)

When I'm bloated or gassy, I sometimes take activated charcoal as it may help reduce gas and absorb toxins.

⚠️ Important: Activated charcoal can interfere with medications, including birth control by reducing their effectiveness. Always check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking it, especially if you're on regular medication.

  2. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea can help relax your digestive muscles and ease cramps or bloating. It's one of my go-to comforts.

  3. Digestive Enzymes

Some people find digestive enzyme supplements help their body break down food more easily after a gluten exposure. This isn’t a cure, but it might offer a bit of relief.

  4. Hydration

Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out toxins and stay hydrated especially if you're experiencing diarrhea or vomiting.

  5. Stick to Simple, Bland Foods

Give your gut a break by eating easy-to-digest foods like plain rice, bananas, mashed potato, or gluten-free toast. Avoid anything spicy, greasy, or heavily seasoned until you feel better.

  6. Rest

Don't underestimate the power of rest. Your immune system and gut need time to recover — it’s okay to slow down.
