Coeliac Disease Travel Tips: How to Travel Gluten Free with Confidence ✈️

Updated: May 11

Travelling with coeliac disease or on a strict gluten-free diet can feel overwhelming especially if you're newly diagnosed or visiting a country for the first time. But trust me, traveling gluten free is 100% possible and even enjoyable with the right tools and planning!

As someone who lives with coeliac disease and loves to travel, I've put together my top gluten-free travel tips to help make your trips safer, less stressful, and way more fun.

🌍 1. Always Pack a Coeliac Translation Card

ree

This is my number one tip for gluten-free travel abroad: bring a coeliac disease translation card.

💡 My Travel Cards explain your dietary needs in multiple languages and help you communicate clearly in restaurants even when there's a language barrier. They cover:

  • What coeliac disease is

  • Which foods to avoid

  • The risk of cross-contamination

  • A polite, clear request for a safe gluten-free meal

➡️ Grab your Travel Cards here! They’ve helped hundreds of coeliacs travel with peace of mind.

📱 2. Use the Find Me Gluten Free App

This free app is a lifesaver when exploring a new city. FindMeGlutenFree shows restaurants, cafes, and bakeries near you that offer gluten-free options, along with reviews from other coeliacs. I use it all the time!

🥖 3. Pack Gluten-Free Essentials (Just in Case)

Especially for self-catering, I like to bring a few staples for the first couple of days: think GF pasta, bread, cereal, or snacks. That said, many countries now have amazing gluten-free sections so do some research before your trip and you may discover some incredible products you can’t even get at home!

💬 4. Join Coeliac Travel Communities Online

Facebook groups like Coeliacs Eat Abroad are a goldmine of first-hand advice, restaurant recommendations, and destination-specific tips. Before visiting somewhere new, I always check these groups it’s like having a gluten-free travel guide in your pocket.

🛒 5. Stay Near a Shop or Supermarket

When booking accommodation, try to stay close to a grocery store or supermarket. It’s super helpful if you run out of safe snacks or want to explore local gluten-free brands. Plus, you never know what unique GF treats you might find!

🛫 6. Research the Airport Before You Fly

Airports can be tricky, so I always look up the food options in advance. Use Coeliacs Eat Abroad or search online to see if your departure or arrival airport has gluten-free-friendly restaurants. Some airports now offer jacket potatoes, salads, or even GF sandwiches but always double check!

Don’t Let Coeliac Disease Hold You Back from Exploring the World 🌎

With a bit of planning and the right resources, you can eat safely and confidently wherever you go.
